Chelsea Manager Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Links as Pure Rumour
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded recent talk linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester, addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, has a contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a possible extra year option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my attention, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions Following Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent comments come in the wake of he described a previous two-day spell as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled widespread speculation of a possible rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club next season and called on supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy persists as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the situation publicly, there has also been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unresolved.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has become notably awkward, leading to fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising start to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field position is positive: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the Carabao Cup last four, and can achieve a better Champions League position with strong results in their final matches.
The prevailing question is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might eventually affect a team that was beginning to look cohesive.
