Comeback Medvedev Claims First Title in 882 Days
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been achieved on hardcourt
A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his maiden trophy for 882 days with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.
Medvedev, a ex- world number one, has endured a challenging season, winning just one win at the big events and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - caused him falling of the top ten and eventually parting ways with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.
Presently working with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought competitive victory over opponent Moutet.
This represents the player's initial title after the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt from March of 2023.
The win also means he has achieved 21 victories at twenty-one distinct events.
"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my two daughters at once, so to get a championship is really nice," stated world number 14 Medvedev.
"This championship is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I won when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, featuring in that event earlier this year.
Medvedev's counter-punching approach and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had led observers to wonder if his skill to compete at the elite level was concluded.
Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to advance forward and compete assertively, supported by an better service.
Medvedev fought back from a break down in the opening set against the tricky opponent, winning 4 of the last five points to go ahead.
The pair exchanged break points in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden professional championship, took control to force a third set.
The opponent saved four initial chances in a close final set before Medvedev broke to 15 to close out the victory.
Appropriately, Medvedev clinched the title with a point at the net area, with Moutet failing to handle a return after a lengthy match.
