Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
Offseason Issues and Public Attention
This event follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its modern-era championship drought.
The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing effort to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, regardless of their status or wealth.
