French authorities will start intercepting small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to back the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
