Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
But, a segment of conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
