Space Traveler Shares Depression After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also included experts in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
