Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
