Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were no match against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
